The Story Behind Pela’s Mission

The team over at Pela has a pretty ambitious goal: to prevent one billion pounds of plastic from ever being made. They built their vision for a waste-free future on the belief that the technology to make it so already exists. Jeremy Lang, the company’s founder, took his family on vacation to Hawaii in 2008. During that trip, his son dug up some plastic on the beach. It was in that moment Jeremy began to consider the enormous impact that plastics have on our planet.

From that trip, Pela was born. With it came the values they rely on to realize a future without waste. They call them the Four C’s, and they keep the brand in touch with its mission.

1. Community — everything they do must benefit the global community and environment as a whole.
2. Creativity — creativity makes things better, so with a little bit of creativity, they can make the world a better place.
3. Consciousness — forces them to live with the awareness and consequences of their decisions, no matter how small.

These goals and aspirations may seem a bit far fetched, but we can assure you that they’re not. In fact, at the moment of writing this, Pela’s community has kept more than 4.8 billion plastic bags out the oceans.

Furthermore, Pela is a certified B Corporation, Climate Neutral certified, and a member of 1% for the Planet. Membership in these organizations shows support for the growth of local communities, combating climate change, and keeping coastlines clean and healthy!
